River Tablet
The River Tablets Series, are 2 and a half feet high beeswax and oil paintings on wood panels, which are hinged. The right panel is attached to the wall. They are painted on 3/4-inch MDO board, which gives them a door-like quality when opened
My painting process for these pieces involves layers upon layers of oil paint and beeswax to create a light, translucent surface. Some areas of the paintings might have as many as twelve layers. I melt the wax and paint it on with a brush over a first layer of paint. Then I scrape down the wax until it is translucent before I apply another layer of the image. The process takes time but is necessary to achieve a surface full of beautiful texture and light. Each piece is etched with an original poem, inspired by the painting. The images are from the place where I grew up: the mountains of Maine.
